Cardiology Specialist Dr. Kadir Polat gave important information about what should be considered by those who have had a heart attack.

Smoking increases the risk of heart attack

Smoking appears to be a very strong and independent factor in cardiovascular diseases and should definitely be avoided. Stating that exposure to passive smoking also increases the risk of disease, Cardiology Specialist Dr. Kadir Polat; “The risk of presenting with a heart attack for smokers is 2-3 times higher than for non-smokers. Observational studies show that patients who quit smoking have a lower risk of death in later years than those who continue to smoke. Smoking cessation is the most effective of all secondary prevention measures.

Exercise therapy is used for long-term rehabilitation following a heart attack. It is known that regular physical exercise is very beneficial in stable coronary heart patients. Stating that exercise can reduce anxiety associated with life-threatening diseases and increase the patient’s self-confidence, Dr. Dr. Kadir Polat continued his explanations as follows:

“It is known that exercise training as a part of coronary rehabilitation programs reduces the risk of cardiac death by 26% in coronary heart patients. In addition, exercise can reduce anxiety associated with life-threatening illness and increase the patient’s self-confidence. At least 5 times a week for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise to the point of mild shortness of breath is recommended. Light walks are the best exercises to begin with, and the duration of the exercises should be increased gradually. Target exercise time is 300 minutes per week. In extreme hot and cold weather, exercise should be avoided.”

Hypertension must be kept under control

Uncontrolled hypertension causes an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. For this reason, blood pressure should be well controlled, especially in patients who have had a heart attack. Underlining that all hypertensive patients should have blood pressure values ​​below 140-90 mmHg, Dr. Kadir Polat said, “We recommend lifestyle measures such as weight control, increasing physical activities, reducing alcohol intake, salt restriction and increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables to all patients with hypertension.”

Beware of obesity, the enemy of the heart!

Obesity, the disease of our age, is an increasing problem in patients who have had a heart attack. Saying that weight loss reduces cardiovascular disease due to its positive effects on blood pressure and blood fats, Dr. Kadir Polat also shared his recommendations on diet and weight control:

  • Fruits (2-3 servings), vegetables (2-3 servings), whole grain foods, fish (especially oily varieties at least twice a week) times), consuming lean meats and low-fat dairy products.
  • Replace saturated and trans fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from vegetable and marine sources and reduce total fats to less than 30% of total caloric intake.
  • Get 30-45 grams of fiber daily.
  • Limiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages to 1-2 glasses a day for men and 1 glass a day for women. The amount of pure alcohol in the alcoholic beverage consumed in a week should not exceed 100 grams. (1 double raki contains 25 g, 1 glass of wine contains 16 g pure alcohol.)
  • Alcohol consumption should not be recommended for cardiovascular protection for patients who do not drink alcohol due to personal preferences.
  • Avoiding processed and prepared foods.
