Advice for asthma sufferers in winter

The cold weather in winter can cause coughing and asthma attacks in some heat-sensitive asthma patients. Particularly, sports done outdoors in dry and cold weather, and sometimes even walking slightly in the cold air in the morning and evening, can trigger asthma symptoms due to the cooling and drying of the bronchial walls, leading to a picture called ‘exercise asthma’. Influenza upper respiratory tract infections, which are common in winter and sometimes cause epidemics, are also one of the most known and common triggers of asthma attacks. Chest Diseases and Adult Allergy Specialist Prof. Dr. Serhat Çelikel warns that influenza infections lead to severe asthma attacks that can reach life-threatening levels, especially in asthma patients whose treatment is inadequate and who do not use regular medication. Here are 10 important rules that asthma patients should pay attention to during the winter months!

Pay attention to the 10 winter rules in asthma!

  • Get a flu shot every fall.
  • Stay away from places where there are large crowds of people during periods of epidemics of influenza.
  • Use a mask during epidemic periods of influenza infection.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • If possible, do not go out in the early morning and evening hours when air pollution is more intense.
  • Cover your face with a scarf to warm and moisten the air you breathe, especially in dry cold weather.
  • If you are allergic to house dust (mite), avoid activities that increase humidity, such as drying clothes inside the house.
  • If there is mold growth in the house, be sure to fix the problem.
  • Heat evenly throughout the house to prevent mold growth. Wipe moldy walls with bleach or use paints that prevent mold growth.
  • Exercise indoors and in hot environments. Use your inhaler asthma medications half an hour before exercise. Do not start the exercise directly, make sure to warm up beforehand.
